For the last few years I’ve worn a necklace holding the thumb prints of my 2 oldest children preserved forever on a pendant. It’s one of my most precious pieces of jewellery; unique, personal and meaningful. But as a mum of 3, I’ve always felt a little guilty that my youngest held no place in my limited jewellery collection. That guilt how we, stopped today.
Because today was the day when I became the proud owner of a piece of Bella & Bow keepsake jewellery. And here’s how it all began;
Roll back 5 days and an envelope arrived on my doorstep containing a print kit; 4 sheets of special coated paper, a wipe and a return, pre paid envelope. So the following day, as my boy sat quietly watching some early morning TV, I gently wiped his hands and feet with the wipe and took imprints of each on the paper. Using a book as a support, each crevice and crease developed on the sheets almost immediately, although some were smudged and I left a few marks from my own fingers dotted round the edges, I was assured wouldn’t be a problem. No fuss or stress, that stage was much easier than I anticipated.
I had the choice to with send them immediately back in the pre paid envelope or to take a photo (or scan) and send them as an email. I chose the later so I could keep the original prints myself.
So that was that. As easy as pie and without a trace of our mini activity. It was nothing like previous, messy attempts at hand printing. All that was left was to now was wait…..
Which brings me back to the moment my youngest joined his brothers, always with me where ever I went. My oldest 2 around my neck my youngest round my wrist. As a working mum, when I’m not with my boys, it’s a comfort to know that there’s always a little part of them closeby. A little something to remind me of my achievements and an instant smile maker.
The solid silver charm holds not only my son’s footprint, there’s also his handprint along with his name. held in place on a corded bracelet which I can wear everyday, and won’t get in the way while I get on with the day. It’s perfectly proportioned and feels like it’ll last an age.
