A Sensory Play Session in the Garden

A Sensory Play Session in the Garden

My iPhone weather app said sun, the fishermen down the beach said sun, hell, The Met Office 40 minutes down the road even said sun.  But the heat wave STILL took me by surprise.

Completely unequipped for entertaining a toddler in the garden, I had to think quick. His all time favourite so far in his little 13 months  is the dog bowl, so I knew water should feature somewhere and after emptying a whole box of cereal on the kitchen floor then enjoyed 20 minutes of rubbing his hands through said cereal on the floor, this week, I decided we’d make our own water / sand combo beach.

After wandering around the house chanting “think, think, think” I dug out a lap tray and shallow garden tray, one for the water and one for the sand. Who needs a garden full of brightly coloured plastic (well me obviously, but that’s by the by)  when you can compromise with a few lesser coloured plastics. And I’m happy to report it went down a storm.

After doing the obligatory taste test with everything, then hesitating as he waited for the “leave the dog bowl alone” command from me, I gently encouraged Baby R to step into the sand, not sure, I gave him a plastic fork and spoon to dig into it. This was followed by some water splatting and then full body submersion. Success!

A sensory play session in the garden, ad hoc.

I love this and the way baby R gradually moved from hands to feet in the sand and water. A lovely way to enjoy the heat and cool off too. Sensory play is so educational for toddlers and fun too. I hope you have more garden inspiration over the summer months. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.

Thanks Fiona, he was really taken with it. We only have a pebble beach here so sand os a real novelty.

It was one of those suits where I bought it ages ago and forgot then accidentally found it in the cupboard, result!

Looks like great fun. I did a similar thing , although I didn’t have any sand I just found an old washing up bowl and lots of plastic toys that could swim. Hours of fun – mainly involving me filling and refilling the bowl of water but sometimes it’s the simple things they enjoy most (our swing set and big garden police car are mostly ignored!)

I was thinking of upgrading to a ride on car but that confirms my thought, it’ll just end up abandoned!
